Ten Good People I Met by Chance

I was trying to look back the other day, feeling somewhat dizzy, as I sat  in the  scorching heat that is characteristic of this city of Douala. The breeze was beginning to be generous to me. I was looking back when my mind settled on this rather strange thought. I discovered that most of the people that had put a smile on my face are people I had met by sheer coincidence; then along the way a strong bond had developed. You know that I am not the emotional type that easily is carried away by feelings. I strongly believe in reason. But I firmly believe that even Aristotle appreciated the feeling of friendship. I am about to talk to you about ten people I met by chance; but the chance of meeting them made my life better.

Babe Glory
Akongoh and Babe Glory
Yeah, babe glory, she is not my daughter; I know what might be running through your mind. She was the daughter of a neighbor. A bilingual, little, intelligent, young charming girl of about three. We lived in the same building and she was so keen on the guitar that I used to practise. On weekends and the days she did not have classes at school, she would run and come stairs to play the guitar with me. It was fun and she played it with all her might and enjoyed it even when there was hardly much harmony in the playing.  She would hold the strings and twang them in all directions as if to say one could produce beautiful music by chance. Sometimes babe Glory turned the knobs of the guitar such that the instrument went out of tune. But it was good company having her.

Actually, what first brought us together was her little drawings. She was fond of drawing little beautiful young girls of her age from her reader (she did not present any boy among her drawings) after which she would  colour them; She believed so much in her little drawings and would have no negative criticism about them. Most of her drawings were very beautiful; but she and I  also agreed that even those drawings that were not of my taste were also amazing drawings!😊

What I enjoyed most about her was her innocent passions for the things she liked and wanted to do and how it was difficult to forbid her from the things she had a drive for. As obedient, as she was she knew she wanted to twang the guitar, draw little girls and be happy in life, and she did it with innocent passion. She and her parents moved house, but I still enjoy her company, the company of Babe Glory. Whenever I look back, I usually feel I need to be as passionate as she, as innocent as she and as happy as she, yes as happy as Babe Glory!

Unfriend me? Why?

Unfriending people is sometimes a strange thing. I have been receiving invitations lately. Actually, I mean many Facebook invitations from people we had celebrated friendship in our own way before Facebook began its X anniversary stuff. Actually I thought the
phenomenon strange and I have not broken that line of thought at all. Each time I receive an invitation from someone, I ask myself why the person had unfriended me in the first place. Then I accept the request and move on, in line with my Facebook policy.

But recently, I have received notifications telling me of hackers who go round impersonating my friends and I am worried accepting new friend requests from people who were already friends with me on Facebook. However, this is why someone may think befriending you on Facebook is shit!
  1. YOU ARE NOT INTERESTING: Facebook is a very good tool for socialising. Sometimes, many people get here to talk about things and to make friendships, repair bonds and maintain broken ones. Sometimes, however, people don’t have the same like of discussion. While one likes soccer, the other likes girls, and the other, God. And when this goes on for a long time the likelihood is for someone to think you are shit!
  2. YOU POST ABOUT CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES: Topics that raise negative sentiments about race, religion, gender etc. cause some people to move away from you. They do not want to associate with “people like that” because your activities may actually constantly remind them of things they should have loved to forget. So is your friendship not shit? I must say that controversial topics also bring out people from their quiet, NB.
  3. YOU DON’T GIVE WHAT THEY WANT: Facebook is a big market where people scout for marriage partners, sex partners, scam victims etc. some people come to the site with specific objectives and when you don’t measure up, well you are a piece of shit, SIMPLE!
  4. THEY HAVE TRAVELLED ABROAD: Africa is generally regarded as a poor continent and the residents of this continent share the view, at least partially hihihihihihihihi. So when some people go to America or Britain or France or some other developed countries, they systemically begin to weed out those who chat purposely to “beg for money”. So if you ask for money too much, why not, your friendship is really shit!
I was just going through my album. I joined Facebook long ago. I saw a friend I had chatted with, but surprisingly she had unfriended me. But really she had never been this interesting person to chat with. And I began wondering why she would unfriend me. Perhaps I was more boring to her than she was to me, hahahahhahahaha. So I will send her an invitation, perhaps, according to my Facebook policy and fortunately for her, or me, she will accept and tell me why my friendship had been shit just when she got married.
